Traditionally, product prototypes are designed at one firm, then manufactured at another firm. This process disconnects design intent from the manufacturer as the machine shop has no knowledge of the parts application. It’s a “make it to the print” scenario where design errors propagate to prototypes with no chance of being discovered and corrected until parts are received. In general, prototypes are experimental and thus are prone to design and drawing revisions which cause costly delays.
